New YA Novel Spacey & Go-Anna by Greg Howell Captures the Spirit of 1980s Coastal Australia

Sydney, Australia—October 23, 2025—A new voice in Australian young adult fiction is making waves with the release of Spacey & Go-Anna, a sun-soaked, emotionally charged coming-of-age novel by debut author Greg Howell.

Set in the wild beauty of 1980s coastal Australia, Spacey & Go-Anna follows two misfit teens—Spacey and Go-Anna—as they escape their troubled pasts in a battered van, chasing freedom with a borrowed surfboard and forging an unforgettable bond. Their journey is filled with dodgy roadkill dinners, van mix-ups, and emotional reckonings, all set against the backdrop of surf culture and Indigenous pride.

"This book is a love letter to the coast, to chosen family, and to the kind of friendship that saves lives," says Greg. "I wanted to capture the grit and humour of growing up in Australia and the healing power of connection."

With vivid prose and a larrikin spirit reminiscent of Robert G. Barrett, Spacey & Go-Anna offers readers a riotous, tender ride through festival haze, roadside chaos, and the deep emotional undertow of adolescence.

Spacey & Go-Anna digital, paperback and hardcover books are available from all major online retailers.

Biography

Greg Howell was born in Brighton, Victoria, Australia, and grew up near the beaches of Port Phillip Bay. He was raised in a typical Aussie family of five. Greg's mother worked as a nurse and later became a radiology assistant, while his deceased father was a wool buyer/classifier and also a hobby farmer. His two sisters both still reside in Melbourne with their families. Greg's daughter also lives in Melbourne. Like his character Spacey, Greg was unremarkable at school but excelled in mischief and survived a lifetime of daredevil pursuits—from surfing and motorcycling to over fifty jobs, including actor, factory worker, security guard, national secretary, executive director, sustainable events manager, business owner, and surfing coach. Restless by nature, he bounced between suburbs, then took leaps to Sydney and the Gold Coast. Greg now lives in Agnes Water, Central Queensland, where he surfs, volunteers at the local op-shop, and serves as a Turtle Monitor. He is also active with a local environmental organisation.

Greg infuses his writing with lived experiences, salty resilience, and humour.
